Becoming a parent is one of the most exciting, humbling, and incredible moments of our lives. As a new parent, you have to navigate a whole new world of caring for and bonding with your child.
While it’s incredibly fulfilling, it’s not easy! So, one thing you don’t want to have to worry about is your professional life. Whether it’s a question of getting paid or the amount of time you have off, a new parent doesn’t need that stress!
US parental leave policies are strict
Parental leave in the US is, unfortunately, completely inadequate. As of today, the US is the only industrialized nation in the world that does not mandate paid leave for mothers of newborns.
While most countries have paid maternity leave policies, the federal government only mandates up to 12 weeks of job protection after an employee has worked at a company for 12 months (FMLA). This isn’t paid time, just job protection.
Many companies in the US offer short term disability (STD) options for employees to buy into which provide a portion of their pay during leave, though. Up until recently, car2go offered STD to new mothers and only one paid day for new fathers.
New parental leave possibilities for NA employees introduced
This needed to change. We realized that in order to align with our culture, we absolutely owed it to our employees to increase this benefit. So in a sweeping new program, car2go introduced primary and secondary caregiver leave to employees. This leaves the decision of who will be the primary and secondary caregiver up to the parents themselves and allows for true flexibility for all families.
Primary caregivers receive 12 weeks of 100% paid leave and secondary caregivers receive four weeks of 100% paid leave. This is comparable to parental leave programs at some of the most recognizable brands in the country, such as Pinterest and Coca-Cola.
More family time
Since implementation, feedback on this new program has been overwhelmingly positive and employees feel proud to work for a company that values giving them a significant amount of paid time to acclimate to and enjoy one of the most incredible moments of their lives.
In the words of one of our employees who has used it, “Until we found the rhythm, the birth of our first child left my wife and I struggling to keep up. The car2go Parental Leave Program was invaluable time we were able to spend with our newborn. Without it, fostering those necessary initial bonds and basic routines would have taken much longer to establish.”
