Get to know Dagmar Fink, our Product Owner

Beneath car2go’s unique and well-known brand lay the passionate hearts and brilliant minds who ensure success every day.  As diverse and colorful our employees backgrounds are is how interesting and varied their tasks can be! But not every job title is self-explanatory, so let’s dig a little deeper.

Dagmar Fink works as Product Owner in our beautiful office in Hamburg. Find out how she supports our developers to create the best possible product for our users, why her life really is colourful and why car2go should diversify into board-sharing!

What does a day in the life of a Product Owner look like?

The life of a Product Owner is varied and colorful. And I love that! As a Product Owner I have the responsibility for a product, which means that I talk to all the different stakeholders and teams, to understand their requirements for my product, merge them and prioritize them. In parallel I talk to users, to understand their needs, such that we develop what they need and not some functionality which they may never use.

As we are working in an agile manner, we are using a LOT of post-its to visualize things, to exemplify something, to come up with great ideas. These tickets add to the colour of my daily life.

How did you become a Product Owner?

I am a software engineer by education and I have always worked in software development, first as a developer, then as project manager, team lead, business manager, program Manager.

Several years ago I took a job as Product Owner in agile software development as I wanted to be part again of the hands-on development process of products. I wanted to interact with users to develop something that eases their lives and excites them.

What do you love most about your job?

I love creating and shaping new things which are useful to others. I like to interact with users to find out what they need – often needs which are not really clear to them.

I like working in an agile and lean manner, where you bring things live as early as it makes sense and where you can react to changes flexibly. And I really like working with my team and my colleagues at car2go: very experienced, innovative and inspiring.

If you didn’t become a Product Owner, what would you be doing?

Considering that I love creating and shaping new products, being a Product Owner is a perfect role for me. However, I could also imagine being an innovation coach & facilitator, where I can work with teams to develop amazing ideas. I love tapping into the collected wisdom and the great capabilities in groups.

Describe car2go in three terms:

Big potential / useful service/ great team

What is important for you in working life?

It is very important to me, that I am part of producing something which I think highly about, both in usefulness and in quality. I have been a happy car2go user since I moved back to Germany in 2013 – so why not join?

Why is working for car2go special?

Urban mobility has been interesting to me since quite some time back. We are wasting so much time travelling from A to B and we are often doing it in a suboptimal way.

And the traffic is causing problems for the environment. In the next years, big changes are going to happen in the traffic realm. I want to be part of this development and have an impact on it – car2go gives me a perfect opportunity to do exactly that.

Aside from working in Hamburg, what do you love about the city?

Hamburg claims to be the most beautiful city in the world and there is some truth to it. I like living here and felt at home right from the start. The Alster lakes are dead-center and canals are criss-crossing the city, which gives many possibilities for water-related spare time activities.

I even went regularly to work to my former company on a standup paddling board. Isn’t that ultra-cool? In how many cities in the world can u do that?? Wait, maybe I should suggest car2go to diversify into board-sharing as well? 🙂

Would you let us hook up your “Recently Played” list on Spotify to the office speakers?

I will suggest that you hook up the birds songs to the office speakers. I feel we are putting so many layers between us and experiencing nature. If we would reduce these layer, we maybe would feel more protective of the environment and would focus more on doing less damage to it.

What are you looking forward to in summer?

When living in Hamburg you value every warm and sunny day you can have. That is definitely something I look forward to: Sitting outdoors on a mild summer evening – Heaven!

Our vacation planning is still in progress. I have been considering since several years to hike across the Alps. Or cross Germany from South to North on bike. Hm, maybe I should ask for a sabbatical and do both. 🙂

On the other side, we have planned some cool new things at car2go, and I am very much looking forward to make those babies rolling together with my team. So, stay tuned.

Thanks a lot for answering our questions, Dagmar!
