Beneath car2go’s unique and well-known brand lay the passionate hearts and brilliant minds who ensure success every day. As diverse and colorful our employees backgrounds are is how interesting and varied their tasks can be! But not every job title is self-explanatory, so let’s dig a little deeper.
Justin Braund works at car2go North America as the Fleet Operations Manager. He shares with us what his typical day in the Operations department looks like, why he is passionate about the car2go brand, and why he loves living in Austin (it’s definitely not golf).
What does a day in the life of a Fleet Operations Manager look like?
This depends on the week or month but one thing remains constant, meetings… lots of meetings! I am involved in many projects within our department, with external vendors, our colleagues overseas on the product or fleet side, and also in support or coordination with the other NA car2go departments.
These meetings include the development and alignment of an infleeting or defleeting strategy, meeting with third party vendors on monthly performance metrics, and developing new strategies to meetings with our financial department to develop the annual fleet budget and review forecasts.
Currently, I am mostly consumed with reviewing and meeting with various fleet vendors for potential new city rollouts. This involves working with our procurement department to determine the right pricing point and business model of the companies included to decide on the right fit for our future locations.
How did you become a Fleet Operations Manager?
I started with car2go in 2015 as the Columbus location Fleet Manager and then interviewed for the Washington, DC Fleet Manager position. After some time in Washington, DC, I was promoted to the NA Fleet Operations Manager in the fall of 2016.
What do you love most about your job?
I tell people all the time that car2go is the first company I have worked for where I feel what I do truly makes a difference for the communities in which we operate. In that regard, the position is very fulfilling knowing that what I do makes a difference for someone else.
If you didn’t become a Fleet Ops Manager, what would you be doing?
If I did not become a Fleet Operations Manager I would more than likely be working in operations management within the supply chain network. I enjoy the fast paced atmosphere and challenge that operations presents on a daily basis and the critical thinking and problem solving it requires.
Describe car2go in three words.
Fun. Challenging. Rewarding.
What is important for you in working life?
Continuing to better understand, develop and push the status quo of the car share marketplace as well as position our fleet of vehicles to be the first choice of current and future members.
What was the biggest project/achievement for you or your team in 2017?
The Hardware 3.0 fleet transition which increased the reliability and speed of connecting to car2go’s! This was completed for 3,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles and 1,000 new Smart vehicles for a total of roughly 8,000 vehicles (infleet and defleet combined)!
This was all completed last year in order to refresh our entire fleet across NA. It was a tremendous undertaking and if not for a great internal team and work ethic, could not have been accomplished. I’m fortunate to have a fantastic team around me that allowed us to accomplish this exchange.
What do you enjoy doing outside of car2go?
Outside of car2go, I enjoy playing golf as much as possible, which is more frequent living in Austin and being able to play 12 months a year. I also enjoy spending time with friends enjoying many of the great restaurants and social scene around Austin and anything and everything Cleveland and Ohio State sports!
