Am I automatically insured with the car2go? Who’s liable if there is an accident? Which costs am I expected to pay? These are all questions about uncertainties to which this overview provides answers.
As an insurance partner of car2go throughout Europe, we from the Allianz are experts on all questions regarding insurance cover during a car2go rental.
We therefore regularly provide informative updates on the car2go blog.
To begin with, an overview of the most frequently asked questions which have already been asked by someone who has already shared or thought about sharing a car, together with the appropriate information.
I have rented a car2go and been involved in an accident in which another car has been damaged or person has been injured. Who is liable for the damages which have been caused by the other party?
There is an important distinction between an accident caused by the customer themself or one caused by a third party.
If damage or injury is caused to a third party in an accident caused by a car2go member, e.g. another vehicle is damaged, then the car2go motor vehicle third-party liability insurance comes into play.
This means that all insured personal injury and property damages of injured third parties, less the agreed deductible reduction, will be paid for by the insurance.
In such cases, car2go works in close cooperation with the Allianz to ensure the fast and proper payment of compensation.
A fundamental requirement here, however, is that the car2go member has complied with the General Terms and Conditions of car2go (Link) as well as the General Conditions of the motor vehicle third-party liability insurance.
If damages occur to a third party in an accident caused by a party other than the car2go customer, then the motor vehicle third-party liability insurance of the person causing the accident is responsible.
In an accident, who is liable for damages to my rented car2go?
Again here, a distinction must be made between an accident caused by the customer themself or one caused by a third party.
If a car2go is damaged in an accident which has been caused by another road user, then the motor vehicle third-party liability insurance of the person causing the accident is generally obliged to cover the damages to the car2go.
If a car2go vehicle is damaged in an accident caused by a car2go member, according to the General Conditions for Motor Vehicle Insurance there is a limitation of liability corresponding with fully comprehensive cover including third party, fire and theft.
Again here, the basic requirement is that there is no violation of the car2go General Terms and Conditions.
How does the car2go collision coverage and comprehensive insurance work?
The car2go full or partial coverage means that, in the case of an accident caused by a car2go member, car2go limits the liability of the member.
As the person responsible for the accident, the car2go member only has to pay a contribution amounting to the deductible reduction.
For smart cars, this deductible reduction is currently 500 euros and 1,000 euros for Mercedes models.
For the AMG vehicles in the car2go fleets, there is a separate regulation in respect of the deductible reduction.
How much does the insurance cost me per minute? Is the insurance fee already included in the rental price? Will car2go be more expensive as a result?
Both the insurance for damages to third parties caused by car2go members and damages to the rented car2go vehicle (excluding the deductible reduction), which occur during the rental, are already included in the rental price for car2go vehicles.
car2go members do not have to pay any separate costs for the insurance.
Why does car2go include a motor vehicle third-party liability insurance although I already have this cover myself?
The reason is simple: If a car2go member causes damages to a third party during the rental period, this is not covered by either his private liability insurance or his private motor vehicle third-party liability insurance (if available).
The private liability insurance basically insures the financial risk which the person causing the damages has to cover.
This type of insurance, however, generally explicitly excludes damages caused through the use of a vehicle.
For motorized vehicles, motor vehicle third-party liability insurance is legally required.
This type of insurance is generally, however, bound to a vehicle. The insurance cover therefore only applies for the vehicle for which the policy is taken out and not for a rented car2go vehicle.
How many vehicles are covered by the Allianz insurance, and at which locations?
In cooperation with car2go, the Allianz currently provides motor vehicle third-party liability insurance for all car2go vehicles in Europe.
Hence, regardless of where a car2go member rents one of the more than 7,500 car2go vehicles at any of the current 13 locations in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria or Spain, they can fully rely on Allianz insurance coverage.
