When people think about getting up in front of an audience to speak, what emotions come to mind? Fear? Nervousness? Excitement? For many, it’s a combination of the three! Being able to write an organized speech, speak effectively, and engage an audience is an extremely important skill to have. So, that’s why car2go recently introduced Toastmasters to the North American employees!
What is Toastmasters?
Toastmasters is a world leader in leadership development and focuses on developing people’s public speaking, leadership, and organizational skills.
Their mission is to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
How does it work?
Once a Toastmasters group is formed, the members elect club officers who will run the day-to-day functions.
Then, the group will meet at a certain cadence to allow members to begin completing their speech curriculum and building their leadership skills.
Before each meeting, members volunteer to fill the different meeting roles. Some of these roles include being the Toastmaster (aka the meeting moderator), Timer, Table Topics Master (calls on random members to come up and speak about the meeting theme), official Speakers, and speaker Evaluators.
During the course of a meeting, each of the eight role volunteers will have exposure speaking to the group and the initial curriculum focuses on ten speeches that each member completes at his/her own pace.
However outside of the speeches, much of the value that comes from Toastmasters is volunteering for different meeting roles and learning how to become more comfortable in leadership and speaking situations.
When car2go thought about how to keep career development fresh and exciting, Toastmasters was at the top of the list.
So, the company jumped on board and has paid for any interested employee to join the group, called Toast2go!
In North America, Toast2go has 34 members and has met 8 times so far. In that time, Toast2go has given employees an opportunity to not only improve their speaking and leadership skills, but also learn much more about employees they don’t normally work with!
It has been a big success that all employees, both at the HQ in Austin and at city locations, can benefit from.
